OPINION ESSAY - AITOR DÍAZ
Does violence in society, especially in teenagers, increase when more violence is shown on television?
Nowadays, almost everyone has a television at home and it’s not very strange to be opened at least about 2 hours a day. Probably it’s the most used electronic device at home. If I had the opportunity, I would watch it everyday. Television is a good way to learn interesting things, entertain yourself and to be in contact with what’s happening in the world, but what about the violence it shows?
First of all, I agree, in my opinion violence does increase in society when it’s shown on television. I think that teenagers are the most vulnerable group to its violence, due to the exaggerated amount of hours we spend in front of the TV. We have a lot of free time, which we waste watching stupid series or whatever it’s shown at the moment. Another fact that makes violence increase in us when it’s shown on television easier than in adults is how influential we are. As teens, whose decision-making capacity hasn’t been finished to develop yet, we try to imitate adults, and television does not show good examples for us. If you show violence, you create violence. I mean, If, you, who watch the television regularly, open the TV and see two adults screaming at each other, that’s what you are learning.
To sum up, I believe that if we want violence to decrease, government should ban some series because of inappropriate behaviors and stop trying to make money off them.
